And they work for a very concrete reason: nobody argues with what they've lived through.
Why theory isn't enough
The biggest obstacle when you deploy lean isn't missing knowledge. It's the conviction that this doesn't apply here.
You can spend two hours explaining that a big batch stretches your lead time. The answer will be that in this plant it's different. It's always different.
In a lean game, the team produces first in big batches and measures. Then repeats in one-piece flow and measures again. And the difference shows up on their own table, with their own hands, in twenty minutes.
From that point on, you aren't having the same conversation any more.

How to get value out of them
Measure every round. The value is in comparing rounds, not in the game. Without numbers you've run a pleasant activity and nothing more.
Make sure the decision-makers play. Supervisors are usually the ones with the big batch most deeply lodged in them. If only the operators play, the learning lands exactly where the decisions aren't made.
Close with the transfer. The final question isn't what happened in the game. It's where is that same thing in our plant. Without that step, nothing is left in a week.
The bridge to 2026
I use lean games to explain industrial AI too. Because there's a misunderstanding that talking simply won't shift.
When somebody hears "artificial intelligence in the plant", they picture a system that decides for them. And the fastest way to get that out of their head is to show them a real case.
At a bakery, the AI decides nothing strategic. It looks at every piece five times a second and warns when two of them are too close together and are going to stick in the oven. That's it. It's a poka-yoke that can see.
When someone from the floor understands that's what this is about, rather than a machine coming to judge their work, the resistance drops away. And you don't get that change from a presentation. You get it from a concrete example they can touch.
